UNIT 1 – the creators of the FARO smart cycling helmet with integrated lights – have smashed their Kickstarter fundraising to get their latest product, the Torch cycling backpack, to market.
With nearly four times their goal amount now pledged, the UNIT 1 team describe the Torch backpack as combining “pro-level organization and tough materials with all-day comfort, wireless charging and integrated lights for riding”.

Safety first
UNIT 1 research revealed that 70% of cyclists don’t feel safe enough when cycling in the dark, even with existing bicycle light solutions in place. With many cyclists – especially those who commute – choosing to wear a backpack while riding, UNIT 1 realised that they could create a backpack product that improves visibility and safety, as well as having all of the other functionality that’s required.
Made from durable and waterproof materials, the Torch cycling backpack, in its basic form, features a 20-LED high-intensity tail light, as well as an additional lighting pad that can be customised via an app. A switch on one of the shoulder straps allows the lights to be turned on and off while on the move, and the Torch also includes a removable battery pack for wireless charging.
Buyers can also choose to include add-ons with their purchase – including a handlebar-based remote that can activate turn indicator and brake lights on the backpack. The Torch backpack is also compatible with the Faro helmet.
Comfort and functionality
It’s not just about the tech, though. The Torch has also been designed with comfort and functionality in mind, including an ergonomic harness, a variety of tech compartments, a wet/dry compartment for cycling gear, a USB-C charging port, a helmet holder and more.
Currently, the Torch is being offered in both 18 and 23-litre capacities, and in a choice of four different colours. Once funded, the backpacks will be shipped out in May 2022. Learn more on UNIT 1’s Kickstarter page.
