Have you ever wanted to make your own potato chips instead of going to the shop and buying a bag of those tasty but rather unhealthy commercial chips? Well, if you happen to have an air fryer at home and don’t want to leave your house to get some chips, then you can make your very own home-made chips using an air fryer. Don’t know how to cook chips in an air fryer? We’ll show you.
Sure, you can just fry the chips, or put them in the oven until they get nice and crispy, but by cooking them in the air fryer, you’re making a healthier alternative with just a bit more effort. What’s great about air frying your potato chips is that they’re much less greasy and much tastier than the chips from the oven, let alone the frying pan.
Air fryers are generally very useful and have become quite popular over the last few years not only because they keep all the flavours of the food trapped inside but also because they are easy to use and even easier to clean.
On top of all that, you don’t have to preheat the oven just for a couple of chips, and the air fryer sure is a much less hassle to wash than a frying pan, so if you already have an air fryer, this is the perfect opportunity to make some of your own chips. Let’s see how to cook chips in an air fryer.
Basic Recipe

For one batch of perfectly fried potato chips, you will need:
- One potato (medium-sized; about 3/4 pounds)
- One tablespoon of canola or palm oil (if you don’t have it, any vegetable oil will do just fine).
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt and pepper.
For seasoning, you can use:
- One crushed garlic clove, or 1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder mixed with a little bit of grated parmesan for that delicious garlic and parmesan flavour.
- 3 or 4 diced cherry tomatoes with some chopped chives.
- Melted cheese dip from your favourite type of cheese.
- Some sea salt and olive oil.
- Salsa (works better with tortilla chips, but no one’s judging you).
Now let’s see how to cook chips in an air fryer:

Step 1.
Slice the potato to thin slices (if you like thick slices go for it). Ideally, you can use a mandolin slicer to get perfectly sliced potato chips, but if you don’t have one, a plain kitchen knife will work just fine.
Step 2.
Put the potato slices in a large bowl of cold water and soak them for 20 minutes so that they soften up and soak up some of the moisture, otherwise, they will be too dry when you take them out of the air fryer. After that, drain the water and wipe the bowl dry and put the slices back in the bowl.
Step 3.
Add the oil, salt, and pepper into the bowl and toss gently to coat the slices. Don’t put any other ingredients now, as they might burn while the chips are being cooked.
Step 4.
Lightly coat the air fryer basket with some vegetable oil or cooking spray and put the temperature at 190°C. Then, put half of the potato slices in the fryer and cook it until they’re crispy for about 25-30 minutes. Cook the chips in two batches to make sure all the slices cook trough.
Step 5.
Carefully remove the chips with a pair of tongs. Serve them on a plate and sprinkle them with garnish or add the seasoning you like the most.
Conclusion
And there you have it. Now you know how to cook chips in an air fryer, but the fun doesn’t stop here as you can repeat the same method for making homemade French fries, chunky fries, tornado chips, curly fries, and even baked potatoes. Just don’t try to make mashed potatoes, as we don’t know how that will end up, but we imagine you’ll have a lot of cleaning up to do.
The recipe is basically the same for most types of potato dishes which can be cooked using an air fryer. You just heat the fryer at the required temperature and cook the potato for 20-30 minutes, depending on the thickness of the slices. Also, feel free to use some of the seasonings we mentioned as they go along with most potato dishes. Bon Appétit!
